The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
All the talk about the (GOAT) is about Messi and Ronaldo. But neither have ever lifted the World Cup. In fact, neither are the top two in terms of trophies lifted.

So how do you measure the greatest footballer to date?

Messi has never won a World Cup for his Country, Neither has Ronaldo.

Not disputing they have had glittering careers, and I respect their achievements. But neither are the greatest in my humble opinion.

Talking about the best ever player in terms of trophies their team has won is like talking about the best ever actor based on the box office receipts or oscar nominations that their films have had. It's a team sport, and no matter what the likes of Henry Winter will tell you, it takes a team to win a competition, not one player.

I'd rather base the GOAT on who I'd most like to watch play and Messi has it well over Ronaldo, although Fat Ronaldo in his early years was better than both.

Don’t think it matters that what they’ve won as have been some unreal players who through loyalty have ended with a bare cabinet.

Defenders generally overlooked as they don’t get the goals and the monstrous legends of defending in the kaiser and Moore were before my time, but for sheer talent hard to look beyond that dirty cheating cunt maradonna in my lifetime.

Unreal player, literally had it all.

I'm too young to have seen Pele or 'prime' Maradona (just) so I can't really comment on either properly.

In terms of Messi/Ronaldo, Both amazing but my feeling is that Ronaldo could do more with less- especially for his country.

Having watched the film about fat Ronaldo the other night, (well worth it- BBC 4) fuck me what a player he was. He'd be in the discussion had injuries not robbed him. Crocked by the time he was 23. Some of his stuff from the late 90s was scary. Pace, power, incredible skill and deadly finishing.

I've always thought it harsh on the great defenders that the best players of all time seem to have to be forwards.

They were discussing the World Cup greats on the MOTD podcast and debating whether the ones from the past would still be great today and vice versa. Would Messi have stood out as much on those awful pitches and being kicked from pillar to post, for example? For me, yes of course, as with his level of skill he'd just adapt.

Having said that, It's between Moore and Pele for me.

I would put Pele, Beckenbauer, Sir Bobby, Cruyff and Maradonna above those two, that's before I have got to the likes of Zico and Zidane.

My personal Goat though would have to be Maradonna if you want a specific answer.

From talking to old cunts, none of them (including hammers fans) even had Moore as the best English player ever.

Was always Bobby Charlton.

Yeah, Football Italia on Channel 4 used to show loads of Inter Milan games in the mid-late 90s so I was lucky enough to see Fat Ronaldo a lot in his absolute prime. His technique wasn't quite up to Messi's standard but he did it all at double the speed. He had a great career later at Real Madrid but he was never as explosive as in them early years.

I doubt many would have a defender as their top player but our Bobby was probably the finest and if the Kaiser thinks this who am i to disagree .

Messi has been the most consistent match winner ever. Second highest trophy tally.

Re: The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT)
For me it’s Messi, but when said if he could do it 30 years ago it was completely a different game, any really talented player was going to get the shit kicked out of him as the game was more physical and the refs didn’t give players the same amount of protection as they get now.
